Call 1669 for injuries

Give a precise location, the number of injured people and immediate hazards such as traffic, fire or a vehicle in water.

Use 191 for an urgent police emergency

If there is an immediate threat, dangerous conduct or a situation requiring police response, call 191.

Use 1193 on highways

The government contact list identifies Highway Police at 1193. Describe the road, direction and nearest kilometre marker or landmark.

Document only after the scene is safe

Take photos of vehicles, road position, plates and visible damage when it is safe to do so; retain rental, insurer and booking details.

Practical preparation

For a rental vehicle, use the provider’s verified emergency or claims contact and read the contract you agreed to. Avoid signing or accepting terms you do not understand; request an explanation or translation through an appropriate official or provider channel.
