Start with the service that matches the emergency

Emergency contacts are operational information. Use this guide to prepare, then call the responsible service directly when help is needed.

1. Get out of immediate danger

If you can do so safely, move yourself away from traffic, fire, fuel or another acute hazard.

2. Call for medical help

Call 1669 when anyone is injured or unwell. Provide the location and relevant hazards.

3. Call the appropriate police service

Use 191 for an urgent emergency; the official contacts list Highway Police at 1193 for highway assistance.

4. Preserve the practical record

When safe, record the location, time, people involved, vehicles, damage and the report or reference details the attending authority provides.

5. Contact the provider and insurer

Use the verified number in your rental agreement, insurance policy or card documentation; do not rely on a number offered by an unknown bystander.

Practical preparation

Keep a written timeline while details are fresh. Ask your provider or insurer what documents it needs, and keep originals of any official paperwork. If you need language help, Tourist Police lists 1155 as a visitor-assistance route.
